RAILWAY OPERATIONS How is the traction current generated? Traction current is generated in a variety of ways. The railroads already use as much electricity from renewable sources as possible in some countries already around 60 percent at present. For example, Bavarias hydroelectric plants at Donau, Isar and Walchensee lake have been supplying environmentally friendly traction current for almost 100 years. Modern electric vehicles also recycle the electricity released during braking and feed it back into the overhead line. GENERATING AND ENSURING A FAULT-FREE POWER SUPPLY V.01c Rolling stock DC electrified trains run on 600 V, 750 V, 1,500 V or 3,000 V. They use often overhead lines or third rail contact systems. AC electrified trains run on 15 kV AC or 25 kV AC using overhead lines. DC traction substation (yard) Transformation from AC (e.g. 70 kV) to DC (e.g. 1,500 V) for railroad overhead line Rectifier Circuit breaker Circuit breaker / Protective relay Railroad power line Battery The local power utility provides AC power to the railway company. This can range from 10 kV to 350 kV.
