Sometimes, the sounds are audible, but more often, they are ultrasonic; that is, they are at frequencies above the limit of human hearing. By ‘listening’ for these sounds, it is possible, in principle, to discover that a fault is present and, by tracing the source of the sound, to find the location of the fault. This is the principle on which acoustic imagers work.
